2011 Grammy Award-winner Tia Carrere and Grammy Award finalists Amy Hanaiali‘i and Slack Key Masters of Hawai‘i are among the winners in Johnny Kai’s 15th Annual Hawaii Music Awards. Kai will present awards to winners in 31 categories during the 2011 Hawaii Music Awards Show April 11 at the Japanese Cultural Center.

Carrere’s Grammy Award-winner, “Huana Ke Aloha,” is the winner in the Children’s Music category. “Amy Hanaiali‘i and Slack Key Masters of Hawai‘i” — the group project by Amy Hanaiali‘i Gilliom, Dennis Kamakahi, Elmer “Sonny” Lim Jr., Chino Montero, Cyril Pahinui and Jeff Peterson — won in the Contemporary Hawaiian category.

Kai created the Hawaii Music Awards in the mid-1990s to provide recognition for local recording artists who were not winning Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. There is currently no residency requirement. Kai adjusts the categories each year to accommodate the recordings submitted; in categories with only a single title, the honoree receives a “Recognition Award” for keeping the category open.

Voting is by email and open to the public worldwide.

Good thing you are doing this, Johnny. I have nothing against Tia, but the words may be Hawai’ian
but the music IS NOT ! That should have made the difference in the Grammy Awards . AUWE !
But you go for it to give proper recognition in the proper catagories !
