Dangerous 15- to 20-foot surf drew a large crowd to Banzai Pipeline at Ehukai Beach Park for the first day of the 2011 Billabong Pipe Masters on Thursday, Dec. 8.

Hawaii’s own John John Florence proved why he is the North Shore’s newest rising star and leader of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing ratings, turning in a perfect 10 score on one wave during his 40-minute heat.

“It only gets this good a couple of times a year,” said Florence. “I’ve never seen it this good in a contest. It’s an event, but it’s also an opportunity to surf Pipe at it’s best. There’s no one out, it’s just perfect.”

According to event organizers, competition is expected to resume today in similar conditions.
