The youngest group of dancers ever to compete on MTV’s popular “America’s Best Dance Crew” has made its way to next week’s championship show, and Hawaii has a vested interest to see 8 Flavahz win.

After receiving the most viewers’ votes out of a reported two million-plus tabulated from the previous LMFAO challenge, the Hawaii/L.A. crew 8 Flavahz has moved on, along with their competitors Elektrolytes from Gilbert, Arizona, who had to defeat the Los Angeles teacher-choreographer Mos Wanted Crew in head-to-head battle in order to make it to the championship.

And compared to previous weeks, voting for the crews is ongoing up until Wednesday, June 13, 1 p.m. EST (7 a.m. Hawaii time). Next week’s finale will be live on MTV on the 13th at 10 p.m. EST, when guest artist Katy Perry will be helping 8 Flavahz and Elektrolytes shape their dance routines. “America’s Best Dance Crew” will once again be shown on a delayed basis at 10 p.m. here in the islands, although by 5 p.m. that day, local fans should know if 8 Flavahz prevailed to win the “ABDC” title for this season, thanks to the Internet and social media platforms.

To vote for 8 Flavahz for as many times as you want, you can call toll-free 1-855-4-CREW01 (427-3901), text the number 1 to 22444 or click here to vote online (and if you’re feeling generous towards Elektrolytes, who’ve been terrific in the later rounds and is the true sleeper crew in the competition, it’s 1-855-4-CREW02 and text 2 to 22444).

This week, the crews danced to mastermixes of songs from superstar DJ David Guetta. All of the groups had to incorporate props and moves from Guetta’s videos — special LED-lit gloves, a Nicki Minaj doll and kicks to be used for gliding.

The crews danced before finding out the voting results. The all-female 8 Flavahz arguably did their best choreography to date, and the judges agreed. D-Trix said their routine was “sick as hell,” pointing out the lyrical dance groundwork and Jaira Miller’s impressive seven consecutive spinning coupé. Lil Mama loved how they all did the one thing the other two all-male crews couldn’t do, and that was a sinuous, feminine group walk. She also pointed out a stellar trio setup that started from a sitting Indian position that sprang into a coordinated backflip.

JC Chasez added that it was a “fantastic” routine that took advantage of the girls’ individual and group skills.

We’ll wait in anticipation to see if those skills will translate into a championship win for 8 Flavahz and the $100,000 grand prize that goes with it.

Look for a feature on 8 Flavahz in the Tuesday, June 12 edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
