Truth from Dare: Love for Labor Day
BY DERIN DEREGO / Special to the Star-Advertiser
Can I just share for a moment how much I love Anderson Cooper? My adoration for him stems from a number of things, but one recent instance reaffirmed my feelings are warranted.
While most everyone was up in arms crying foul about Miley Cyrus’ recent performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the seasoned journalist pointed out how ridiculous it was for people to be so bothered by someone whose job it is to entertain — did just that.
I personally didn’t care for her antics, but I wasn’t shocked or offended. I was more shocked by the resulting media coverage and conservative news anchors who were so outraged they continued to replay the clips over and over. And over. And over again.
News outlets should know if they don’t like something, they should bury it — not give it more attention and fan the flames. The only people who benefit from that are Miley Cyrus and the machine behind her.
Another thing I have lots of affection for is Thursday night in Honolulu. To me, Thursday is the forgotten stepchild of the weekend.
True, most people work on Fridays, but that day is already recognized as the least productive day of the week. Many people I know work harder early in the week so they can take Fridays with a grain of salt (or sand), making Thursdays the perfect weeknight for an outing. The fact that not everyone has the luxury of casual Fridays also serves to thin out the Thursday crowds just enough to save them from being like the craziness we know as Friday and Saturday nights.
Thursdays have also seen a resurgence of things to do lately, and this week’s parties promise to deliver in a big way.
The freshly reopened NextDoor in Chinatown serves up “The House Party Next Door” tonight, Aug. 29, for the 18-and-over crowd. Hosted by A Room of House, Livewire, Odin Works and Pure Coalition, you can expect the best in thumping house music and laser lights galore.

Another big party tonight is the one year anniversary of M Nightclub. It seems like it’s been a lot longer since their grand opening, but that may be due to the numerous times I’ve been there in such a short period.
The club is going big for its first birthday, with a live performance by rapper Lil’ Jon. I can just hear the annoying abundance of “yeaaaahhhs” now!
Of course with Monday being Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer, there’s a lot to do all weekend.
On Friday, Aug. 30, M Nightclub will host 2012 Red Bull “Thr3Style” world champion DJ Four Color Zack. The last time this talented Seattle-based turntablist played here, he kept the partygoers raging until closing at 4 a.m. I usually don’t hit up the same spot two nights in row, but with limited appearances by awesome DJs in Hawaii, I’ll make an exception for Zack.
Another event I’m looking forward to is “DRIP: Day Club” on Sunday, Sept. 1. After all, what’s Labor Day without a pool party? This one takes place at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel and goes from noon until 7 p.m.
My advice? Gather a bunch of friends and go in on a cabana. For $350, you get a bottle of liquor, a bucket of six beers and your own inflatable kiddie pool! Click here for more info.
As you can see, there’s a lot going on this Holiday weekend. Get a jump-start and take advantage of all the fun things Thursdays have to offer!
