Truth from Dare: The craziness continues

Last week I wrote about how busy the month of October is. And while it may sound like I’m complaining, I actually enjoy the annual events that happen this month. They give me something to look forward to when the fall comes around and break up the monotony of the weekly club events I tend to frequent.

This past week saw some great events crammed into one long weekend. Things started off on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Halekulani with the Hawaii International Film Festival’s opening night reception. Saturday, Oct. 11 saw the return of POW! WOW! Hawaii’s annual gala fundraiser where supporters, clad in white, came out to raise money for the annual art event.

On Sunday, Oct. 12, a new Miss Hawaii USA was crowned, and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser gave props to Hawaii’s favorite eateries at the annual ‘Ilima Awards on Monday, Oct. 13, at Diamond Head Theatre.

As you can see, I’m not exaggerating when I say October is one of the busiest social months of the year. This week the craziness continues.

Thursday, Oct. 17, I’ll be posted up for the last of my birthday celebrations at The Dan Band show at The Republik. While this obviously isn’t an annual event, it’s a must for me. If you’ve seen “Old School” or “The Hangover,” then you’ll remember the hilarious spoof band led by comedian Dan Finnerty. My fingers are crossed that they do their adult version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” complete with obscenities.

Friday, Oct. 18 will see the return of one of my favorite parties of the year, the 2013 EuroCinema Hawaii Awards Gala. In recent years, the word “gala” has been thrown around more casually than “supermodel,” but if there’s one event worthy of such a title, it’s this one. The powers-that-be over at EuroCinema Hawaii take over the Moana Surfrider Hotel with this spectacular event that features DJs, cocktails and actual Hollywood celebrities. Past attendees include actor Richard Dreyfuss and director Brian Singer.

Saturday, Oct. 19 is the first of the large scale parties that usher in the Halloween season. “Crazy, Sexy, Ghoul,” put on by the Slopes of Diamond Head Hui, will welcome thousands of partygoers to Aloha Tower Marketplace; be sure to get dressed up, as the majority of guests are. With this party being so early, it’s a good way to get some mileage out of your costume, since by the time Halloween comes around nobody will remember (or care) that you’ve already worn it.

I’ll be closing out my weekend at the release party for the 2014 Hawaii Men’s Calendar at The Republik on Sunday, Oct. 20. The photographers at Shot 55 Photography feature some of Hawaii’s top male models once again this year, and the great thing about this party is that it’s so much more than just a meet-and-greet with hot guys. There will be performances by some of Honolulu’s top dance crews, including Hypersquad, Trans-gression and Blank Canvas. Several hula halau and female impersonators will also take the stage to round out the evening.
When he’s not out and about at the hottest parties and other events in Honolulu, Derin “Dare” Derego works as an account executive at a local radio station group. Reach him via email at or follow him on Twitter.
