Truth from Dare: Getting the jump on summer

The season of sun doesn’t officially start until late June, but on the social scene in Honolulu, summer is already in full swing. There’s been one thing after another lately and there are no signs things will slow down anytime soon.

In terms of concerts, there were two highlights in the past couple days alone. On Saturday, The Republik played host to Major Lazer DJ duo Flosstradamus. The sold-out show was one of the craziest EDM events I’ve been to in a while, made even more intense by the new LED lighting recently installed at The Republik.

Also at The Republik on Tuesday was the Naked and Famous. I wasn’t really expecting much since I only know their radio hit, “Young Blood,” but I was pleasantly surprised the New Zealand electronic vocalist put on a 90-minute show that held the audience of about 800 people captivated and dancing.

The highlight, of course, was a performance of “Young Blood.” The audience chanted the song’s simple lyrics while most were hand waving and shooting video.

THIS WEEKEND is the unofficial kickoff to summer with Memorial Day on Monday. There’s no shortage of things to do whether you’re a daytime enthusiast or a night owl.

On Saturday, eleven44 on Bethel Street hosts Liquid, the official afterparty for AIDS Walk Honolulu happening earlier in the day. The party will feature tapas and drink specials starting at 8 p.m. with music by resident DJ Marlon. The highlight will be DJ Javi, whose blend of disco and house can be heard at the hottest clubs in Europe.

On Sunday, head to NextDoor in Chinatown for DJ S3RL from Australlia. The hardcore rave maestro returns to Honolulu for an 18-and-over party. The last time I saw S3RL was a few years ago and he killed it. If hardcore dance and laser lightshows are your thing, don’t miss what’s sure to be an amazing show.

Since NextDoor is smaller than the venue he played at last time he was on Oahu, I’d recommend either getting there early (doors open at 10 p.m.) or save money and buy presale tickets online.

Of course, if you’ve been in Honolulu for a while you know the highlight of every Memorial Day weekend the past few years has been the Bacardi Pool Party. This year, the party takes place at a new venue — the pool deck at the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel. Addiction Nightclub resident DJ Compose will be on the decks along with my fellow Pulse blogger Christa Wittmier.

This party always hits capacity, so plan on getting there early or you’ll be stuck in line listening to the smart ones frolic. A further enticement to being prompt is the half-off cover offered to those arriving before 1 p.m. with a floatie toy of some sort.

As you can see, Honolulu’s hottest party season is in full effect. This summer is going to be epic!
