Australian actor Brenton Thwaites has been named the 2014 recipient of the Prince and Princess Kawananakoa Rising Star Award by the EuroCinema Hawaii Film Festival.

The 25-year-old from Queensland, Australia, had a breakthrough year in 2014, showing he can hold his own next to established Hollywood heavyweights with appearances in films like Disney’s summer smash “Maleficent,” playing Prince Phillip alongside Angelina Jolie. This was followed by lead roles in the sci-fi thriller “The Signal” with Laurence Fishburne and “The Giver” with Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep.

Thwaites’ future projects include the Helen Hunt comedy “Ride,” set to be released next month, and the fantasy adventure “Gods of Egypt” with Gerard Butler, due out in 2016.

Thwaites will be honored with the Rising Star Award at the EuroCinema Hawaii Award Gala on Nov. 8. Tickets are $175 and available at eurocinemahawaii.org.
