“Hawaii Five-0” star Alex O’Loughlin teamed with Egan’s Training Center’s Egan Inoue to host a women’s self-defense training class on Sunday.
Participants paid $300 for a 90-minute class led by the actor and former mixed martial arts champion, with raised almost $15,000 for the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. The last time the classes were held in 2013, more than $10,000 was given to the hospital.
“We had two full classes (and) we actually raised more money than we did last year, so I’m stoked,” said O’Loughlin. “I really enjoy being a part of it. Kapiolani Women’s and Children’s hospital was responsible for saving a friend of mine’s life and I feel a personal connection to that place.
O’Loughlin and Inoue showed the women in attendance a variety of “non-striking self-defense” techniques based on Inoue’s extensive martial arts training. A variety of “simple, yet effective, self-defense techniques for the most common confrontational situations” were presented in an environment designed to empower and boost confidence in those who took part.
“You never know what’s going to happen,” said O’Loughlin. “There’s a lot of bad people out there in the world. … If you know some basics, it could mean the difference between you becoming a statistic or not.”
