Truth from Dare: October birthday fun
BY DERIN DEREGO / Special to the Star-Advertiser
This month is my favorite of the year for a number of reasons. The weather gets cooler allowing for fall fashion. There’s a ton of birthday celebrations as my fellow Libras cut loose. And of course the mother of all holidays, Halloween, closes out a sensational month.
My day of birth actually descends in a couple of days and as most people I tend to reflect on life in general and the past year in particular. I don’t know if it’s just me but it seems like in the past year or two a lot of my peers have been leaving the security of a 9-to-5 to follow their dreams and do something they’re passionate about. Kudos to them as it takes a lot to walk away from something that’s routine and head into the unknown.
Our parents’ generation would probably frown on such so-called careless behavior, and true, not everyone who does this will succeed, but there’s something to be said for taking the risk. I definitely wouldn’t want to go through life wondering, “what if?”
Like I said, my birthday is in a couple of days and it’s safe to say I’m getting older; literally, but even more so figuratively. For the past several years my birthday was definitely over the top. I’d have parties at three or four of my favorite establishments and celebrating would last a week.
This year I’m opting to contain the festivities to one night, Friday the 16th. The game plan begins at one of my favorite bars, Proof Public House. Keeping things intimate with a few close friends is always a good way to start things off. You can actually have conversations with people without the craziness of a nightclub environment and remember them as the libations haven’t kicked in yet.
The main event of the night will be at Scarlet Honolulu. Fridays are always fun there as the music is great and there’s a casual vibe of partygoers who actually came to have fun. I can’t tell you how stoked I am that Scarlet has come along. For the past several weeks they’ve had performances by some of the most popular drag queens in the country, many from the hit television show “Ru Paul’s Drag Race.”
This Saturday, Dumblonde performs live. For those not familiar, Dumblonde is the duo made up of Aubrey O’Day and Shannon Bex of Danity Kane fame. I’m loving how many national acts we’re getting between The Republik, M Nightclub and this new gem in Chinatown.
Another reason I have a love affair with October is one of my favorite annual events takes place later in the month. Next Friday the Moana Surfrider Resort plays host to the Hawaii European Cinema Awards Gala, formerly the EuroCinema Awards Gala. The word “gala” gets thrown around quite liberally here, but this event is truly worthy of the title. Past attendees have been Hollywood big wigs, European royalty, and a serious who’s-who of Honolulu.
If there’s one party to get duked up for and splurge for, a ticket this would be it. Thank God for October.
