BY JASON GENEGABUS / firstname.lastname@example.org
The Mai Tai Bar at Ala Moana Center will launch its 12th annual “Mai Tai Rumble” tonight at 9 p.m. with the first qualifying round of competition and an “Aftershock” concert by Natural Vibrations.
Every Tuesday through Dec. 4, bands will compete in two categories — Open Mic and Island/Reggae — for a shot at more than $30,000 in cash and prizes. Semi-final “Rumble” rounds are scheduled to take place Oct. 30 and Nov. 27; the finals are set for Dec. 4.
Music Over Judgement & Opression will face off against Fun Yung & The Nunya’s in the Open Mic category tonight, with Noble Roots and Bassick Concept battling it out in the Island/Reggae category. Judges will evaluate the bands based on vocal quality, instrumental ability, delivery of selected music, emcee ability and overall stage presence. Island 98.5′s Phat Joe will host the competition.
Here is the complete lineup of “Aftershock” bands; performances start immediately after the “Rumble” competition wraps up around 11 p.m.
