Food La La: Mobile Maid Cafe serves up fun

Mobile Maid Café opened just a few months ago and has recently found a spot on the corner of 926 Sheridan St. right next to Yajima-Ya Japanese food truck.
Mobile Maid’s concept is yummy drinks served to you by cute girls dressed up in frilly maid outfits. The idea comes from the otaku and anime sub culture in Japan. In the Akihabara district of Tokyo, there are hundreds of maid cafes frequently visited by mostly otaku fan boys. The maids serve the customers drinks and play games with them, all while speaking and acting extremely kawaii (cute).
“My daughters and her friends really enjoy the Otaku culture of Japan so I couldn’t believe that there are no Maid Cafes here” said owner Emma Hayashi. “Whenever I go to Japan, I enjoy visiting the cafes there so I decided to start one in Hawaii.”

Mobile Maid Cafe has a big selection of drinks such as coffee, smoothies, and Italian sodas.
I’m not a coffee drinker, so I tried out their most popular smoothie, the strawberry banana milk ($3.50 for a small). It was creamy with just the right amount of sweetness and topped with sprinkles for extra cuteness.
Here are their current drink specials in honor of the upcoming Japanese holiday, Girls Day, on March 3.
Hayashi says that they will carry a few food items, such as acai bowls and an omelet rice bento. Here’s their acai bowl ($7) decorated with star shaped fruits.
“Although we mainly specialize in drinks, I wanted to make one famous item that all Maid Cafes in Japan have, omelet rice”, said Hayashi. “The maids will sing and draw a picture on your omelet for you to enjoy.”
Here’s Mobile Maid Cafe’s heart shaped version ($5) with fried rice. The fried rice has a light flavor and contains lots of pieces of sausage.
Just like the cafes in Japan, Mobile Maid also has games that you can play with the maids while you enjoy your drink. Here are some customers playing a Pocky Stick game.

Mobile Maid Cafe will be at their Sheridan St. location weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They also attend food truck events such as “Discover Kaka’ako” at Ward Centers every month.
