Food La La: My Chef offers new meal delivery service
Now that we are one month into the new year, how is everyone doing on their resolutions?
Like many people, I made resolutions to lose weight and eat healthier, so I think this is a good time to introduce My Chef, a new meal delivery service that specializes in healthy, yet delicious food.
The concept of My Chef is to create ready-made, restaurant quality meals that are nutritious and made with fresh, local organic ingredients. They also use free range and hormone-free poultry, meat and seafood. Owner (and registered dietician) Danielle McCauley works with chef Gida Synder to make sure their food is not only well-balanced, but also tasty and fun to eat.
Customers can choose to have three or four meals delivered to their home weekly; each meal contains an entrée with two or three side dishes. A weekly dessert and fresh fruits are also included. The price comes out to about $20 per meal, with free delivery anywhere on Oahu.
The meals come packaged with labels and directions on how to assemble and reheat — most meals can be prepared easily in the microwave! This is great for people who don’t have time to cook but still want to eat good quality food.
Here’s a sampling of their menu for this week. These are not the actual portions — you will definitely get more than just one shot of soup! — but were plated for photography purposes.
Chef Gida is famous for her soups. Her Moroccan carrot soup was flavorful with lots of spices and had a natural sweetness from the carrots.
This is carnitas with corn tortillas topped with shredded cabbage, pinto beans, cotija cheese and salsa. Chef Gida likes to get creative with their meals so people can try different types of cuisines every week while still eating healthy.
This is one of their side dishes that come with a meal. It’s pickled okra salad. Eating the okra together with the tomato reminded me of a healthy version of lomi lomi salmon.
My favorite dish was the organic pasta with turkey meatballs covered in sage walnut garlic sauce. The sauce was creamy and the walnuts gave the dish a nice texture and crunch. The meatballs had a spicy kick to them!
I didn’t get a picture of the vegetarian “meatloaf” made with mushroom and lentil cake, but you can see it in the video below. It might seem a little weird at first for people who aren’t used to vegetarian food, but it has a nice texture and good flavor. The sweet potato mash that came with it was yummy and sweet.
Also not pictured is an organic vanilla pudding for dessert. It was simple yet so tasty. I didn’t want to stop eating it, but reluctantly I let my cameraman try some. He said that if he had Gene Simmons’ tongue, he would’ve licked the bowl clean — that’s how good it was!
