CACAO FESTIVAL: The Cacao Festival is returning to Haleiwa Farmers’ Market for a third year, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
Chocolates from Waialua Estate, Paradise, Madre, Manoa and Malie Kai Chocolate will be available for sampling, and there’ll be an opportunity to learn more about Hawaii’s growing cacao industry.
There also will be chef demos, cacao farm visits (for $5), keiki activities and live music.
The market is at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and JP Leong Bypass. Visit www.HaleiwaFarmersMarket.com.
FENDU POT PIES: Fendu Boulangerie at Manoa Marketplace brought back its island-style chicken pot pies this month.
The single-crusted pies are stuffed with an unusual mix of savory and sweet — white and dark chicken meat, purple sweet potatoes, green papaya, Hamakua farms mushrooms and bok choy. A regular-size pot pie is $9.75; petite is $5.75.
As always, European-style pastries are available to tempt you, along with sandwiches, pizzas and a selection of fresh-baked baguettes and breads.
The bakery is closed on Mondays. Call 988-4310 to place an order.
PIG & THE LADY GOES TO MARKET: The Pig & the Lady, a pop-up restaurant at Hank’s Haute Dogs, is now a regular at farmers markets around Oahu.
Typically you’ll find the Vietnamese-style street food at the Blaisdell Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays, Kailua Farmers Market on Thursdays and the Kapiolani Community College Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. (Follow @PigandtheLady on Twitter for updates.)
Andrew Le, former sous-chef at Mavro, creates the Southeast Asian-inspired menu. A recent hit is Hu Tieu Nam Vang, a noodle soup in a light broth (Mama Le’s recipe) with pork, shrimp, chicken, garlic chives, fresh herbs and a local egg. Check out Heo Lo Lat, which is local beef and pork wrapped in betel nut leaves grilled on a stick. The menu can change from week to week. Visit thepigandthelady.com for updates.
