Outtakes Online: Red-carpet to open ‘Hang Loose’ run
BY MIKE GORDON / mgordon@staradvertiser.com
Hollywood actor Dante Basco will be in Honolulu for the red-carpet Hawaii theatrical premiere Thursday of the locally made indie comedy “Hang Loose.”
Basco will be joined by co-stars Dion Basco — his brother — and Justin Chon, who is currently starring in “21 & Over” and appeared in the “Twilight” series.
“Hang Loose” was partly produced by James Sereno, founder of Hawaii’s Kinetic Productions, and directed by one of his directors, Ryan Kawamoto.
The red-carpet screening at Ward Theaters is invite-only but it will serve as a curtain raiser for Consolidated Theatre Hawaii’s special week-long run at Pearlridge West 16 of three Kinetic films: “Hang Loose,” “Paradise Broken” and “6B.” That run will start Friday.
With six screenings per film each day, the run has the potential to give the films their widest reach to date. It will also give Basco fans some extended play because he also stars in “Paradise Broken,” a dark story about Waikiki and one young couple’s descent into crime. “6B” is an anthology of several diverse local stories.
“Hang Loose” also stars YouTube sensation Kevin Wu, whose KevJumba channel boasts 2.7 million subscribers and 318 million video views. He won’t be at the red-carpet screening, however.
In “Hang Loose” the character Wu plays is about to become Basco’s brother-in-law. They all come to Hawaii for the wedding, and their lives change after one crazy night. Wu plays a dorky guy and Basco the cool one. Both learn something from the other.
Thursday’s red carpet event begins at 6:15 p.m. with the screening scheduled for 7 p.m.
